Does Your Resume Say “Hire Me”?

 In Blog, SRA Updates

Your resume is the first impression you make on a potential employer. It’s an opportunity to put your best foot forward and make a stellar impact. Is yours making the best first impression possible? When editing your resume, make sure you take the time to get the details right. Here are five tips to make your resume stand out from the crowd and communicate your achievements clearly.

1. Proofread!

Take the time to proofread your resume several times, and have someone else check it over as well. Misspellings look bad, but incorrect grammar looks even worse. Check for spacing errors, misused words, misspellings, and subject-verb agreement. Also, pay attention to point of view and verb tense. Consistency is key!

2. Be Concise

Keep your resume short and concise. It doesn’t have to be a single page, but it should not be over two pages long. Keep it clean and simple. The cleaner the layout, the better.

3. Keep It Simple

Keep the writing simple. Include your title and four to five bullet points per position, making your achievements clear and compelling. List your current firm, education, credentials, and experience. Your name, address, and title should be listed at the top of the page.

4. Remove the Fluff

Avoid the use of fluffy language such as “results-oriented” or “go-getter.” These phrases are too generic and don’t say much about your achievements or character. They are overused and don’t add any value. Let your experience speak for itself. Focus on the results you achieved in your role that improved an aspect of that company.

5. Gear Your Resume Towards the Job Description

Make sure the experience on your resume accurately reflects the job responsibilities/duties for the open requisition. Clients want to hire candidates that have the exact experience they are looking for. Make sure to let the client know that you are a perfect candidate for the opening based on your qualifications!

Your resume sets the tone for the impression you make on the hiring manager and company leadership. It’s an essential part of the job search. Use these tips to make your resume clear, compelling, and easy to read so you qualify to take the next step in the hiring process.
